At the moment, there are several combat styles that people can train in for various reasons. Brazilian Jiujitsu is one of the most popular combat styles that people train in around the world. The abbreviation BJJ is often used to refer to this discipline. To show how popular this style is, many mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters have a strong background in BJJ. When one needs Brazilian Jiujitsu Oklahoma City offers the perfect location to visit.

Fanatics of MMA normally watch MMA fighters, but they understand very little concerning it. As a result, this article gives some background information concerning the art. This art was first developed by its founders in 1900s. Esai Maeda is the founder. The technique is believed to have its origin somewhere in Japan as it is highly based on judo.

This art teaches fighters a lot of skills such as striking, fighting, grappling, and kicking. The old version which was invented by Maeda has undergone adjustments in various ways so that it is what it is today. A person named Helio is known to have played a very big role in adjusting the art so that it could be applied comfortably by people with a small body frame. As a result, if it is correctly used, the art can allow very small people to defend themselves well against opponents who are larger.

The term Jiujitsu comes from the Japanes language. The first part (Jiu) is usually read as Ju and it translates to gentleness in the English language. The second part (Jitsu) is read as Jutsu and it translates to art. Therefore, when the two words are merged to form a single word, it means a gentle art. The style was developed to be used by Samurai warriors for weaponless defense.

Even though involved in the art are some forms of stand-up movements, the most detrimental potential of the art is on the ground. In order to prove the superiority of BJJ over other combat styles, the Gracie Family began to promote it. The promotion was conducted by establishing the Ultimate Fighting Championship, abbreviated as UFC. This championship has grown very popular.

BJJ practitioners wear uniforms during training and other events. Nevertheless, the cuffs on the pants and jackets are made tighter to distinguish them from uniforms other combat styles do use. Differently colored belts signify skill and rank in the style. The highest ranking practitioners use black belts. To achieve it, one must show a high level of mastery of this art.

Black belts are only awarded to individuals who are above the age of 19 years old. A practitioner can only be promoted to a black belt by an instructor who has a minimum of two BJJ degrees. One can only request their first degree black belt after three years of earning the black belt. Also, one has to wait for another three years in order to request a second degree black belt.

These black belts exist all through to the 7th degree. Before proceeding to the next rank, one has to hold the black belt in a lower degree for a specified number of years. The duration for which one holds the black belt in one degree before graduating to the next one normally varies from one degree to the next.
