Three Types Of Martial Arts Oklahoma City Ok

By Susan Martin

Combat styles have been a part of the history of pretty much any culture because one way or another, people had to go to war. Of course, there was a time when guns, cannons and artillery were not invented yet so people had to rely on their martial arts Oklahoma City Ok and striking weapons in order to fight against their opponents. With that, many fighting styles were made and then categorized based on the technical focus of the style.

The first category which is probably the most common would be the striking category. Basically, this type of combat sport makes use of kicks, punches, and basically any type of striking. It is not uncommon for strikers to also make use of palm hits, pounds, knees, elbows, headbutts, and many other moves that cause damage.

Some of the specific combat arts that are more striking based are muay thai, western boxing, jeet kune do, wu shi, capoeira, karate, and taekwondo. While there are some arts in this list that incorporate some ground game, the moves would usually focus more on strikes. These strikes are aimed to do extensive damage and deal a knockout.

The second category for combat style would be the wrestling or grappling style. Unlike striking, punches and kicks are rarely used as the practitioners are more focused on locking the opponent and breaking joints or smashing them to the ground. Some arts include jiu jitsu, BJJ, aikido, xan shou, classic wrestling, judo, and pankration.

Now, there is actually one major advantage that the wrestlers have over the strikers which can prove to be very detrimental. Wrestlers are quite used to fighting in the ground because they have locks and moves that can be used on the floor whereas strikers do not. In order to avoid being brought to a ground fight, one thing that the strikers did was create a move called to sprawl to help them keep their feet firmly on the ground when the wrestler comes in for takedown.

The last category would be the armed arts which involved a lot of weaponry. These ones were the ones that were taught to the warriors and the soldiers during the warring periods. These arts made use of weapons such as staffs, swords, halberds, shields, sticks, chains, nunchucks and more.

Some of the combat forms that primarily made use of weapons include various kung fu styles, kenjutsu, eskrima, fencing, or Indian gatka. These ones, although have hand to hand application, emphasize more on weapon movement. The hand to hand application would be similar to the armed movements since the principle behind armed arts is that the weapon is just an extension of the body.

For those who are interested in taking up a fighting style, these are the three main categories to choose from. Take note that there is no better art than the other as each have their own respective strengths and weaknesses. It would be better to become an all around fighter with knowledge of all but with a specialization of one. That way, one will be able to enhance the strengths of each of them and cover their respective weaknesses in the process.
