The two words Krav and Maga literally mean 'contact combat' in Hebrew, the language of Israel, where the technique was invented. This discipline is meant for self-defense in situations where someone is physically assaulting you. Using the techniques, you can fend them off, stun them and run away to safety so you can call the police.

All you need is the desire to learn some basic moves and learn how to put them together in combat situations. Anyone can understand it, especially since your instructors break each move down for you so that you can use it in real life situations, should they arise.

With Krav Maga, there is a certain mindset that helps you remember and execute your moves. When you are in an attack situation, your nerves and fear may make you forget your moves. However, with the right mindset, you can not only remember, but execute them easily to help you stop your attacker in his tracks.

Most communities have one or more gyms or fitness clubs that will offer you Krav Maga classes. These are usually public and cost an additional fee, even if you already have a gym membership. Though group classes are great for meeting new people and learning together, you may prefer to have a private, one-on-one class. Ask your instructor if that is possible. Either way, you can sign up for one class or a series of classes multiple times per week.

Before you sign up for your first class, ask if there is a chance to get in on a free trial class. Many gyms offer one session for free or discounted so that you can try it out and see if it is right for your needs. If it is, then you can look at the class schedule and see if it fits into yours, then sign up to help protect yourself.
