Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a special type of martial art that is often shortened as BJJ. The idea of using tactics and leverage to conquer larger and sturdier rivals forms the basis of this art. Full strength sparring is only allowed for learners in advanced levels of training.

Such learners must exhibit good self-control and ability. Most people tend to think that all people who take BJJ classes must be fighters. The truth is that such beliefs are unfounded and wrong. Not all BJJ students are fighters. There are very many people who take classes for reasons of becoming physically fit and not for competition. Anybody, regardless of their profession is welcome to take classes.

Participants usually have diverse career backgrounds. For example, among others, lawyers, teachers, fire fighters, police officers, nurses, stay-at-home parents, managers, carpenters, pet groomers, and bankers make part of the leaners in any gym. Virtually anyone can go for classes without worrying about being compelled to take part in competitions. However, if one intends to become a fighter, they are also free to train for purposes of fighting.

Like any other service facility, students are required to register for the classes. Usually, there is a monthly subscription fee that all students pay to use the amenities at the facility. The students may then be required to pay extra money for classes. This money often goes to the tutors.
